More stringent legislation in this area isexpected in the near future in the EU as well as the rest of the world. Therefore there is a strongdemand from the automotive industry on technology reducing vehicle noise.
Experience and research has shown that noise from the drivetrain, such as engine, gearbox andexhaust system contributes only to a small proportion of the total noise at speeds higher than 30km/h. The maj ority of vehicle noise at speeds above 30 km/h originates from the contact betweentires and road surface. This noise is radiated from the tires.
In order to reduce the total noise from road traffic the best method is to reduce the noise from thewheels.
Inside each tire there is a toroid shaped air mass. This mass of air has a specific resonance thatdepends on the size of the wheel. For cars, this is approximately 250 Hz. In the case of a truck thisresonance is at a lower frequency due to a larger wheel. That means, the resonance depends on thesize of the wheel rim and the tire.
As the tire rolls on the road the air mass in the tire vibrates due to road unevenness.
Each uneven part of the road surface initiates impulses in the tire. These vibrations propagate in theair mass inside the tire, which starts to vibrate. These vibrations has a fundamental frequency, at thesame time overtones are created. The noise level inside a tire often exceeds 120 db.
This noise propagates through the sidewalls of the tire into the environment around the vehicle.The noise from tire and the rim is also transferred through the suspension into the car's passengerand driver space. The noise is also transferred through the air in the wheel well into the car'spassenger and driver space of the car. If it is possible to reduce the resonance inside the tire, thenoise is attenuated significantly both in the car and outside of the car.
A reduced noise level from the wheels has the advantage of less need of soundproofing of the car'spassenger and driver space. This will reduce production costs of the car and reduce the weight ofthe car. JP 2005219592 describes a similar method as in JP 2005238888 Where the sound absorbing materialis glued in the U-shaped part of the rim.
WO2012/ 073 721 describes a similar method Where the sound absorbing material partially coveringthe U-shaped part of the rim.
GB2496427 describes a sound absorbing method With absorbing material in cavities of the rim.
The three patents JP2005238888, JP2005219592 and WO2012/073721 have similar problems. Thesound absorbing material increases the Weight of the rim. That means an increase of the total Weightof the vehicle as Well as un-sprung Weight. This increases the fuel consumption as Well as degradesthe suspension properties. These patents also have sound absorbent material With expected shortlife. In patent GB2496427 these properties are not relevant. This rim is very complex and Will havehigh manufacturing costs. The sound absorbing material is a part of the rim andthis material faces the inside of the tire and the gas in the tire. The foam material is also part of thespokes of the rim and is connected to the gas volume in the tire. The absorbing material consists ofmetal With a foamed structure With open pores. The size of the pores is not uniforrn. This structurehas high sound damping properties and the sound vibrations thus are reduced. The porous metal, inmost cases aluminum or similar alloys, is an integrated part of the rim and contributes to thestructural strength of the rim. This makes it possible to produce rims lighter than above describedrims under the heading “Description of related art”. Another advantage is that the sound absorberWill have the same life as the rim itself. The sound absorber integrated in the rim cannot come looseand cause problems.
In order to make f1tting of the tire easier the sound absorbing metal foam facing the tire has anumber of narroW solid ridges Where the tire can slide in the f1tting process. The life of the rim isthe same as a conventional rim Which is the same as the car itself. This spreads the cost of the rim toWhole life cycle of the vehicle.
